A Time of Thanksgiving

THANKSGIVING IN AMERICA.......what is it?

Americans have been celebrating Thanksgiving Day for over 350 years, but many think little about the real meaning of the day, nor know some significant facts. Our story starts before the coming of the Pilgrims.

In the early 1600s, English explorers came to America looking for riches. Instead of silver and gold, they gound corn and native Americans known today as Indians. The explorers saw slavery as a lucrative business. Among the captured Indians of New England was one named SQUANTO who worked hard and learned English very well. However, he prefered freedom and hunger to a full stomach and slavery. His English master allowed him to return home to America. But not for long.

Soon another slave trader found Squanto and this time he was sold to a master in Spain. He lived among Catholic monks who taught him about God. They pitied him and allowed him to return home, but how surprised and sad he became to find that during his absence, all his tribe had been wiped out by the dreaded disease smallpox. The Indians called it the white man's plague.

A year later, in 1620, a group of brave people set out on a small sailing ship from Plymouth, England for the New World. They were unhappy because they could not worship God as they chose. They risked a two months voyage on a rough sea in hopes of finding religious freedom. The called themselves Pilgrims. Even now we call anyone who goes on a religious journey a pilgrim. The journey itself is called a pilgrimage.

The Pilgrims landed on the rocky coast of Massachusetts, a place they named Plymouth Rock. Life was very very hard in the beginning. It was November and cold. The snow fell. The ground froze. Their food supplies ran out. People got sick and died. They were discouraged.

Then they met the Indians. How surprising that on eof them could speak English! Yes, it was Squanto. He became their friend, lived among them and taught them which natural plants and berries were good for food, how to catch seafood and how to make corn grow well by using a dead fish as fertilizer. We can say that Squanto saved the day for the Pilgrims, for without him, there may have been no Thanksgiving Day.

The Pilgrims honored their good relationship with the Indians by making a treaty. Unfortunately, many white settlers which followed did not keep this friendly agreement but exploited the Indians. The treaty contained these beautiful words:
"For as long as the moon rises,
for as long as the grass grows green,
for as long as the rivers flow,
                                  we will be friends.
                                  We will live in peace."

As the Pilgrims approached the second November in America, they decided to celebrate with a feast of thanksgiving. They invited their Indian friends and were surprised when 92 Indians showed up. There were only 55 Pilgrims. They prepared for three days and had plenty to eat: wild turkey, duck, deer, seafood, corn, pumpkins and other fruits of the earth. Before the Pilgrims ate, they prayed. The Indians watched. The Pilgrims thanked God
-- for carrying them safely across the ocean,
-- for seeing them through the first cruel winter,
                                  -- for their Indian friends,
-- for the fruits of the earth,
-- and for at last giving them a place where they
could worship God as they chose.

In the true spirit of this day, we too want to say "THANKS" for the many things we enjoy.

Thanksgivind Dinner in Philadelphia House
